Elementary Comprehensive School Counseling
Mission Statement
The purpose of the elementary comprehensive school counseling program is to provide services, resources, and activities that facilitate the academic, personal/social and career development of all students, as well as assist students in becoming able learners capable of realizing their potentials. It is the responsibility of the school counselor to use educational, community and home resources to foster this development, and to be an advocate for the student’s interests, while providing for their overall well-being.
Information on School Counselors and Confidentiality
In any form of counseling, confidentiality (is a set of rules or a promise that limits access or places restrictions on certain types of information) is important to the counselor and student/client relationship. I let my students know that when they come to see me what gets shared in my office stays in my office, unless
1. The student give me permission to share (I usually get it or am able to encourage them to share with their parents)
2. Someone is hurting them (I am legally responsible for reporting child abuse or neglect)
3. They plan to hurt someone
4. They plan to hurt themselves
Ethically, I am able to consult with other professional school counselors, school physchologists, therapists, etc. I do my best to have discretion with sharing private, family information with teachers. (I follow a 'need to know' basis)
I understand elementary students are minors and parents have a right to know what is going on so if there are any concerns please call.
